The Supramonte Train Sardinia

The Fico Cave on the Baunei coast

The entrance to the Fico Cave is 7 m. above sea level in the splendid limestone wall of the Gulf of Orosei. Handy walkways allow you to walk along the fossil bed of an ancient underground river and enter into the mysterious and fascinating world of this cave system. The cavern is located between the splendid beaches of Cala Goloritzè, Ispuligidenie and Cala Biriola, and is particularly important for the numerous sumps leading to the sea and through which the Monk Seal entered the cave to breed on the beaches inside. Padre Antonio Furreddu, one of the founders of speleology on the island, dedicated his life to studying this mammal. The island’s most important research programmes were carried out by this Jesuit explorer in 1957, in the Fico Cave itself on the Baunei coast.

Free Climbing in Baunei and Santa Maria Navarrese

The Baunei area seems to have been made for the climber. There are cliffs and crags everywhere, while the famous Aguglia, a limestone obelisk 147 m high, has become the symbol of Mediterranean climbing in Europe and has been climbed thousands of times by climbers from all over the world.
In climbing terms, the Baunei area was first explored in the 70’s, but only in the following decade were the more difficult walls overlooking the sea climbed: Aguglia, Monte Ginnircu, Punta Giradili, Punta Argennas. Sports climbing arrived in Baunei relatively recently. The sports-climbing crags Villaggio Gallico and Creuza de Ma on the road down to Pedra Longa, Harbor of Santa Maria Navarrese, and this crag has been a great success from day one

Excursion on the Sardinian Green Train Railway

Trenino Verde (Little Green Train) is the service for tourists run by the Ferrovie della Sardegna which allows you to see the most genuine and fascinating corners of Ogliastra. The Trenino Verde takes you to some of the most beautiful places in the heart of Sardinia, which you can otherwise only reach with great difficulty on foot. The Trenino is ideal for a relaxing, calm day out: its slow speed allows you to enjoy to the full the countryside and wonderful nature, and to visit places full of ancient charm.
Starting from the station of Arbatax at sea level, the Trenino Verde’s route crosses the comunes of Girasole, Villagrande, Elini, Arzana, Ilbono and Lanusei; you see appear majestically the Gennargentu, Sardinia’s highest mountain chain, with its peaks reflected in the lake Flumendosa. The countryside is a roller coaster of thrills: Perda Liana, a limestone “tacco”, sticks up all by itself, then you go into the areas belonging to the comunes of Gairo, Ussassai, Ulassai and Seui, when the landscape changes once again, with many-shaped rocks. After 60km, in the middle of a wood formed of centuries-old holm oaks, the train stops, and you proceed on foot to the Montarbu wildlife reserve, between Ussassai and Seui, with the colours and scents of unspoilt nature. A very nice walk follows among the limestone tacchi.
